Chiropractic is a field of allied health concerned with diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal conditions, most commonly associated with the spine. A characteristic feature of chiropractic treatment is the adjustment, which sometimes produces the popular "pop" sound caused by movement of air bubbles within the synovial fluid in a joint (we do not "crack bones"). Adjustments are not all we do - as chiropractors, we like to look at the human body as a whole and take the bigger picture approach. We often integrate other methods in our treatment, such as rehab and dry needling, as well as collaborating with other health professionals when we feel a multimodal approach is most appropriate.
The short answer is no, it is not dangerous at all. Of course as with every intervention to the human body there are some risks involved, however chiropractors take all the necessary precautions and perform safety tests to ensure that if you are receiving an adjustment, you do not have any of the underlying factors that may increase the risk of side effects. If your chiropractor has reason to believe that an adjustment may not be a safe way to treat your condition, you will not be receiving one. Similarly, if you are concerned about the risks, you do not need to receive an adjustment - simply let your practitioner know that you do not wish to receive one! So if you are receiving an adjustment, you can relax and rest assured that it is safe.
Chiropractic treatment is meant to be non-invasive and painless. It actually feels really nice and a lot of people report experiencing instant relief from tension. Having said that, we are all very different and the experience of pain is a very personal experience. Your practitioner will never do anything that you are not comfortable with and if you feel sore, they will stop immediately. After being treated, particularly with dry needling and deep soft tissue work, you may experience a little bit of discomfort short term - sort of like the way you feel sore the next day after a heavy workout.
The most recent research indicates that chiropractic treatment and other forms of manual therapy can help with alleviating musculoskeletal conditions, particularly back pains, muscle pains, headaches and nerve pain. People experience pain differently and we continually see results that are unexpected and quite baffling. The advantage of chiropractic care is that it is very safe, meaning that the benefits can be great whilst the risks are very low.
